The Bullit is Small Lure Company’s slow-sinking twitch bait: a slim, solid stickbait built to match small forage like anchovies, sardines, silversides and scad. It sinks far slower than a metal jig, so you can work it through the middle of the water column and keep it in front of feeding fish instead of watching it fall straight past them.

Each Bullit is hand cast, sanded and painted around a real mother of pearl (abalone shell) insert that throws soft blue and pink flashes as the lure moves. The body is UV enhanced and the belly glows, and a welded stainless steel through-wire connects the line tie and the hooks.

How to fish it

• Twitch and pause: a rhythmic twitch makes it zig-zag side to side.
• Burn it: a very fast retrieve brings it up to dance erratically across the surface.
• Dead stick: on a long pause it sinks horizontally with a wobble and a shimmy, flashing the abalone on the way down.
• Jig it: pull the belly hook and swap the tail hook for your preferred single to fish it like a slow-falling jig.

It comes rigged with ultra anti-rust wide gap single hooks and split rings. Small Lure Company suggests swapping to heavier terminal gear when you are targeting fish over 50 lb. Each lure ships in a recyclable (or compostable) cardboard box.
