The Avet MXJ is a great all around size for flylining sardines and casting smaller jigs. Avet rates the Classic MXJ at 10-25lb, and with 9lbs of drag at strike there is enough there to fish 25 or 30lb line if you want it most people set drag to a quarter or a third of the line’s breaking test, which is what makes that work. This model comes as a two speed with the MC cast control, and the two features do different jobs: the second gear is what lets you drop into low for extra winding power, which helps most when bottom fishing with bigger weights, while the magnet is what keeps the spool honest when you’re casting a lure rather than soaking bait. The Classic or 1st Gen reels have been discontinued for some time and replaced by the G2’s but these are still a great deal at the discount offered. The “J” models in Avet’s lineup are all narrow reels specifically for jigging, but they’re also great for casting and hold plenty of the appropriate line test.
